Comenius week is the time of celebration for all Polish schools whose students and teachers work on European Union projects. In Ciechanow three schools are involved in project activities. One of them is Technikum Nr 2. We are working on the project “Food with the taste of Europe”. The aim of the Comenius Week celebrations is to inform the local community about Comenius actions, project results, European cooperation between schools and to make them interested and involved in project activities. In the framework of the celebrations in the School Complex Nr 2 there was a presentation held by the students involved in the previous project “Ethics – live values in European communities” that had been finished last year. The students informed the local community representatives: parents, students from other Ciechanow schools and journalists about the project impact on the school, its results and European cooperation with partner schools. Another presentation, by the teacher Agnieszka Sech, concerned “Food with the taste of Europe”. She told about the objectives and organisation of the project, its anticipated impact on students, teachers and local community. In order to provide more information, the students working on the project prepared a display of photos and materials gathered during the preparatory visit in Belgium in October 2002 and the project meeting in France in 2003, which the school coordinators had participated in. Another initiatives were taken by gastronomy teachers from Technikum Nr 2 who conducted open door cooking lessons for parents, teachers and students. The lessons aroused a lot of interest, especially among students. 13 November was the last day of the Comenius Week in Ciechanow. On that day students from the three schools working on European projects gathered in front of Technikum Nr 2 building to take part in a pageant with Comenius Week banners, yellow and blue baloons and music. The participants marched to a medieval Ciechanow castle where a bonfire with roast potatoes had been prepared. In front of the castle the students sang joyful songs in European languages: French, English and German and danced. They also released helium-filled baloons on which the students had written their wishes for Europe. Moreover, they were served potatoes roast in the bonfire, which used to be traditional, simple food of Polish farmers working on potato lifting. Serving the simple dish to the participants of Comenius Week pageant meant to show that Polish customs, traditions and dishes are our national treasure and are well worth popularising in Europe. After the celebrations near the castle had finished, the local govrenment representatives, journalists and headmasters of Ciechanow schools were invited to try European dishes prepared by students working on the project “Food with the taste of Europe”. The guests could also see a display concerning European projects and listen to the headmistress Mrs Żmijewska and project coordinator Izabela Perera talk about the school’s involvement in European projects. | 19 February: The Danish teachers came to our class.
They talked about
their country, their system, and other things. It looked a little bit like our “ABC”. They also learned use a few words we can use when we go to Denmark. It were very easy words like: hello and goodbye. The school system is very different. They go to a “normal” school until they are 15-16 years old, then they choose a subject they want to study. Then they work a year, and after that year they have to come back to school for 10 weeks. They do this for 3 years, then they have to take an exam and if they pass that they get a diploma. They also learned use that the national meat is “pork”. There are a lot of pigs in their country. The Danish teachers also wrote something on our wall. The Danish people (where we go to) are also 10 in number 8 girls and 2 boys. In Denmark you don’t have to pay taxes on alcoholic drinks. They also told us that at their school students call their teachers with their first name. Not like mister van Steenwinkel but like Mathias. I think that Danish is very difficult. Strange pronunciation! But the Danish teachers were very cool and pleasant.
